An au pair is a single person, between the ages of 17-27, who comes from abroad and lives as a member of your family to learn English. Their duties usually include light domestic work and helping to look after children.
Au pairs from EU countries have no restrictions on coming to work in Britain. However, au pairs from outside the EU must apply for a special Home Office visa.
The visa is initially for a year in most cases and states that the au pair:
§ should not work more than five hours a day
§ cannot stay more than two years
§ should be given free board and lodging, including a room of their own
§ be paid a reasonable weekly allowance (usually about Ł45). The minimum wage legislation does not apply to au pairs.
§ must have two full days off per week
Countries outside the EU included in the au pair scheme are: Andorra, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Hungary, Macedonia, Malta, Monaco, San Marino, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Turkey.
It is important to realise that an au pair is usually a teenager of 17 or so. They are unlikely to have any childcare training and may also have no experience of looking after children. It is therefore inappropriate to give them sole charge of pre-school age children.
As au pairs usually stay between six and 12 months they tend not to offer the stability of a long-term carer. However, if you work from home or part-time, an au pair can be very useful with a young child, doing some light housework and evening babysitting. Au pairs are most suitable for school age children, dropping them off and collecting them and supervising them for a few hours until you get home from work.
As many au pairs come to Britain to improve their English, you will probably need to arrange for your au pair to attend English language classes that are run by local authority institutes, colleges of further education and private language schools or tutors.

Advantages of using an au pair
§ your child remains in the home environment
§ you dont have to get your child up and out of the house in the mornings
§ although you house and feed them, their wages are not high
§ they can teach your child a foreign language
§ can do some light housework and occasional babysitting

Disadvantages of using an au pair
§ inappropriate to give them sole charge of pre-school age children
§ should only work five hours a day
§ they must be treated as a member of the family and you will be acting in a semi parental role.
§ because they are from abroad, there is usually no opportunity for a face to face interview
§ usually only stay between six and 12 months
§ there may be a language barrier
